Delhi is the National capital of India. It is a part of North India with Haryana surrounding it on three sides. Delhi since ages has seen the rise and fall of numerous empires including the British Empire. On first sight one sees the crowd and Heavy traffic in the busy metro life of Delhi. Red Fort was built in 1648 when the then ruler Shahjahan decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. It was his palace with two different courts, one fro his ministers and the other for public hearings. The Red fort is made of red sandstone and has a circumference of 2.4Km. India gate is a memorial to The Unknown Soldier who died in the First World War. The Amar Jawan Jyoti is the eternal flame which honors the memory of 90000 soldiers who died in the First World War and the Afghan Wars. The walls of India Gate are inscribed with the names of over 13000 soldiers who died in these wars. Qutub Minar was built by Qutbuddin Aibak, a moghal ruler. There is a mosque at the base of this 72.5 meters high monument. There is an iron pillar adjacent to Qutub minar, the significance of which is that is has not rusted ever since it was built in the 5 th century. Qutub Minar is made of red sandstone. It has beautiful carvings and some verses of the holy Quran inscribed over it. Chandni Chowk is as famous as the RedFort in Delhi . It is the largest wholesale and retail market of Delhi. It was built when Shahjahan shifted his capital to Delhi . It is also a religious place as it houses a number of temples, mosques, churches and Gurudwaras. One can shop till they drop in the chandni chowk. It is located in front of the red fort. Jantar mantar was an observatory built by jai singh, a nobel in the Mughal court. It was used for the astronomical calculations at that time. There are five such observatories in India . Jantar mantar is situated at the center of Delhi , the cannaught place, near the New Delhi railway staion.
